Lightening

Lightning is a natural phenomenon in which large amounts of electricity are discharged from one location to another through open air, resulting in a bright arc of light. During an electrical storm, clouds begin to build up powerful electric fields, eventually ionizing the air around them and developing a powerful current. These areas, called step leaders, form paths of ionized air (or plasma) that slowly make their way toward the Earth. If a step leader makes contact with another ionized path, called a positive streamer, it creates a completed path for the plasma to travel on, allowing the accumulated current in the cloud to travel between the two points. This results in a lightning bolt and an explosion of air, which we call thunder.

Why do I see lightening before I hear thunder?
While thunder and lightning form at the same time, both caused by the same connection of ionized air between the sky and the ground, they do not reach distant locations simultaneously. Because the speed of sound is far slower than the speed of light, the light from a flash of lightning travels much more quickly than the sound wave that accompanies it. As such, the farther away people are from the initial point of a lightning strike, the longer it will take the thunderclap to reach them. For this reason, many people use the amount of time between a flash of lightning and the clap of thunder to judge how far away from them an electrical storm is taking place.

What are the effects of being struck by lightening?
There are different ways to be hit by lightning and each can be very dangerous. A direct strike produces the most voltage and can be deadly, or you could just get a mild shock from the relatively low power of surge voltage. Regardless of the type of strike you experience, the electricity most commonly affects three systems. The majority of deaths result from damage to the circulatory system and cardiac arrest. Lightning can paralyze the respiratory system too and kill the victim by lack of oxygen. A lightning strike also can damage the central nervous system and cause a number of problems, such as dementia, amnesia, memory loss and depression.

What are the different types of lightening?
Several types of lightning can be visible during storms, thanks to a number of variables that affect the way electricity discharges in the air. The most well-known type is cloud-to-ground lightning, in which a cloud initiates the strike, causing the discharge to arc downward into the ground below. Ground-to-cloud lightning is the opposite -- in this case, a tall object on the ground initiates a strike that travels up into a cloud. Lastly, cloud-to-cloud lightning occurs when a bolt arcs between two clouds in the sky without actually reaching the ground. These three types of strikes make up the bulk of most naturally occurring lightning, though several rarer phenomena may occur in special circumstances.
